Description
**This is a Full Time position at 40 hours per week in McHenry OR for Cardiovascular Surgery. Position is four 10 hour shifts plus on-call rotation (arrival within 30 minutes) and two or more years in Cardiovascular Surgery is preferred.**
The Surgical Assistant reflects the mission, vision, and values of NM, adheres to the organization's Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines and all other regulatory and accreditation standards.
The Surgical Assistant, under the direct supervision of a surgeon who is physically present in the operating suite, performs as a first assistant to the surgeon. Under the direct supervision of the operating physician, the assistant may assist in the positioning of the patient, preparation and draping of the patient, and visualization of the operative site, in addition to significant surgical tasks such as, maintaining hemostatis, opening and closing of surgical sites, exposure of the surgical site, harvesting grafts, dissecting tissue, removing tissue, implanting devices, altering tissues, wound dressings, and other intraoperative technical functions pertinent to the procedure in order to effect safe patient care in the operating theater. Assists in maintaining correct count of instruments, sutures and sponges.
Responsibilities:
- Positioning the patient for the surgical procedure.
- Providing visualization of the operative site.
- Utilizing appropriate techniques to assist with permanent and temporary hemostasis.
- Participating in volume replacement or autotransfusion techniques as appropriate.
- Utilizing appropriate techniques to assist with closure of body planes.
- Selecting and applying appropriate wound dressings.
- Providing assistance in securing drainage systems to tissue.
Duties that are expressly prohibited for the Surgical Assistant:
- Performance of medical history, physical examination and/or psychosocial assessments.
- Diagnosis and treatment of medical problems.
- Development of plan of care for the patient.
- Ordering of diagnostic testing and procedures.
- Ordering prescriptions.

Qualifications
Required :
- Current Illinois Registration as a Surgical Assistant.
- Current and/or pending certification from the ABSA for Surgical Assistants preferred, NBTSA certification acceptable with surgical first assist work experience.
- Broad based knowledge of advanced concepts in operating room practices and a minimum of 1-3 years of operating room experience required. CPR required.
Preferred :
- Current Certification by the National Surgical Assistant Association on the Certification of Surgical Assistants.
