The Role
GovExec is seeking a staff reporter to join our team of journalists who deftly cover the business of the federal government, from its workforce to its department and agency leadership. You will be a critical player in reporting, writing, and promoting stories that range from the implementation of the President’s Management Agenda to the shift to AI from a management perspective to tips and tools for aspiring federal leaders. This position will report directly to the Executive Editor.

- Drawn to complex topics and have a desire to present them in clear and accessible fashion to a broader audience.
- Curious and enjoys reading studies, talking to federal leaders, managers and researchers, delving into data and summarizing findings in an engaging narrative.
- Relish working with a team of reporters and editors who represent a range of views and yield high-quality journalism.
- A confident speaker who enjoys a good discussion be it over the phone with a source or in front of an audience as a moderator at events and conferences.
This role can accommodate remote or hybrid work out of our Washington, D.C., office.
Responsibilities
- Chronicle the embrace of emerging technologies like AI among senior executives and program management and subsequent leadership and human capital shifts.
- Be able to switch between filing daily stories and working on mid-and longer-term enterprise projects such as topical features or interviews.
- Illuminate the evolving paths and capabilities for federal workforce advancement and leadership development.
- Find fresh angles on, or insights into, issues pertinent to agency and senior executive leadership.
- Report on the talent management issues defining the federal contractor base, federal workforce and agency leadership.
- Travel to cover events and conferences as well as speak and moderate at Government Executive’s own events.
Qualifications
- 2+ years of journalism or equivalent experience.
- Self-starter eager to identify and cover leading policy issues affecting federal leaders and the federal workforce.
- Excellent reporting, writing and digital newsroom skills, with a demonstrated ability to write incisive news analysis.
- High metabolism for consuming and covering the news.
- A track record of successful, audience-focused work, and filing clean, accurate copy that meets AP Style.

The compensation range for this role is from $60,000 to $80,000 per year.
