Job Summary
The Buyer position is responsible for procurement activities supporting category management strategies and business partner requirements for Southern Company fossil/hydro power generation facilities. Duties include locating sources of supply, issuing requests for quotes, creating & issuing purchase orders (inventory, non-stock materials, and services), engaging with business unit partners, interacting with suppliers, expediting & order tracking, analyzing bids, and other supply chain duties as required.
Posting Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain Management, Business, Technology, Finance, or other relevant technical discipline preferred
- Education or experience in procurement
- Certified Purchasing Manager (CPM) or other Supply Chain certification is a plus
Experience
- Previous procurement/sourcing experience is a plus
- IBM Maximo procurement software experience is a plus
- Preferred: Demonstrated performance in a transactionally intensive role
Knowledge and Skills
- Knowledge of purchasing and supply chain practices and standards
- Ability to manage a demanding workload with competing priorities
- Strong organizational skills and keen focus on attention to detail
- Knowledge of Gas, Fossil/Hydro Generation, Power Delivery and/or Corporate operations purchasing is a plus
- Supply Chain system application knowledge, understanding or experience related to, but not limited to, Maximo, GEP, Oracle Cloud is a plus
- Professional communication skills, analytical skills, and negotiating skills
- Ability to engage and interact with business unit personnel and suppliers
- Strict adherence to procurement procedures, documentation obligations, and compliance requirements
- General knowledge of business practices associated with procurement, such as budgeting, traffic/logistics, contracts, engineering, risk management, accounting, invoicing, and legal
Key Responsibilities
- Work closely with business unit partners, category managers, and contract agents to best accommodate their supply chain requirements
- Develop and evaluate proposals for materials and services to determine best purchase value
- Issue purchase orders for the procurement of goods and services
- Resolve conflicts and/or discrepancies involving pricing, invoicing, material specifications, delivery, and contracts
- Develop and maintain relationships with suppliers, business unit customers, and teammates
- Effectively meet business unit expectations
- Must work from either the Georgia Power Corp HQ or Energy Center a minimum of three days per week with the other two days being optional remote working days
